What we collect
When you fill out a Smart Enough survey or sign-up form, we may collect:
Contact information: your email address and, if you give it, your name.
Survey answers: your responses to the questions we ask. Some of these may be about your views on energy, resources, the economy or public policy.
Optional details: if we ask and you choose to answer, your province or territory and general demographic information such as an age range.
Technical and usage information: the date and time you submitted the form, and which ad or link brought you there. We also collect whether you open our emails or click their links.
We only ask for what we need. Optional questions are marked, and you can skip them.
How we collect it
Directly from you, through survey and sign-up forms hosted by Typeform and [website or other platforms].
Through ads on Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and X that link to our surveys. These platforms may tell us which ad you came from and how our ads perform.
Through our email service provider, (e.g. Mailchimp), which records whether emails are delivered, opened or clicked.
Why we collect it
We use your information to:
Send you The Smart Enough Brief and other Smart Enough emails you agreed to receive, such as new episodes, videos and events.
Understand what Canadians want to know about energy, resources and Canada’s economy, so we can choose topics and make better content.
Share survey results. We may publish or share results in combined form, for example “62% of respondents said…”. Combined results never identify you.
Measure and improve our surveys, ads and emails.
Meet our legal obligations, including keeping records of your consent.
We won’t use your information for any other purpose without asking you first, unless the law requires or permits it.
Your consent
By checking the box on our form, you agree that we can collect, use and share your information as this notice describes. Checking the box is your choice. If you don’t check it, we won’t add you to our email list.
You can withdraw your consent at any time. If you do, we’ll stop sending you emails and stop using your information, except where we must keep a record by law (see “How long we keep it”).
Emails and unsubscribing
Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link. You can also email [privacy contact email] and ask to be removed. We’ll process your request within 10 business days.
Who we share it with
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We share it only with:
Service providers that help us run Smart Enough, such as Typeform (surveys), Mailchimp or Gmail (newsletter), Squarespace and CRM tools of our choosing. They may use your information only to provide their services to us, and they must protect it.
Advertising platforms (Meta and X), only to measure how our ads perform. We may share a scrambled (hashed) version of your email address with Meta or X so we can show Smart Enough ads to similar audiences. You can opt out of this by contacting us.
Authorities, where the law requires it.
We don’t share identifiable survey answers with sponsors, partners or member companies. Any results we share with them are combined.
Where your information is stored
Some of our service providers store information outside Canada, including in the United States and the European Union. While it’s stored there, it may be accessible to courts, law enforcement and national security authorities in those places. We choose providers that use reasonable safeguards to protect it.
How long we keep it
Email address and consent records: as long as you’re subscribed. After you unsubscribe, we keep a record of your consent and when you withdrew it for up to 3 years, as Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation requires.
Survey answers: up to 5 years, and then we delete them or remove anything that identifies you.
Combined, anonymous results: may be kept indefinitely.
How we protect it
We use reasonable safeguards to protect your information, including password-protected accounts, two-factor authentication where available, and limiting access to the people who need it. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we will notify you and the appropriate privacy regulator.
